Münz Corporate Challenge 2010

The VR team remains true to tradition: At the Münz Corporate Challenge this year, which was played for the 8th time on Friday, 25th June, 2010, seven runners were starting for VR. Again, as in the previous year, Diana Kettner (Purchasing  Department), Stefan Krauss (Department of National Sales), Daniel Schönberger (Human Resources) and Benjamin Fasel (trainee) were starting. New at the start were Dominik Botzet (Construction Department Safety Barriers), Tobias Heisig (Division Purchasing Steel) and Managing Director Jan Keetman. And also like last  year: Sabine Schnupp, manager of our friend company "Monta Systems" in Montabaur.

VR-fastest runner in 2010: Benjamin Fasel. With 19.18 minutes the 21-year-old student broke the internal  VR-record of 19:33 minutes and even placed 38th ranking in the overall standings. Stefan Kraus and Daniel Schönberger - who had established the record last year - placed 2nd and 3rd   ranking inside the VR-team.
"The atmosphere within the team was great," said team captain Diana Kettner. "After the run everybody was really looking forward to a cold drink." The team was actively supported by Sarah Schäper (Department of National Sales), Matthias Riesel (Technical Department) and Myrko Bellmann (Export Department) and provided with refreshments after the finish line.

The team was particularly pleased about the participation of Jan Keetman this year, who is a member of the corporate management. "That encourages the
>> we-feeling <<, Diana Kettner added, "and who knows, maybe next year even more VR-runner will be at the start."

VR trainees pass exam

The trainees Nico Kaiser, Manuel Lorenz and Kevin Schmidt, from VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH, Montabaur, successfully completed the latest training in the field of “Safety Barrier Technique” in front of the watchful eyes of the examination board of the Chamber of Commerce at the end of June.

The general examination of the theoretical part for “metal parts finisher” was extended to include a specialized knowledge of standards and specifications applying to the building of safety barriers, as well as the practical development specifically for this occupation. A two year training period is required for the new occupation, “Safety Specialist for Restraint Barrier Technology”, which has only been offered in this form since 2004. Nico Kaiser from Heilberstadt, Manuel Lorenz from Olbernhau and Kevin Schmidt from Ötzingen accepted the challenge with great motivation. Kurt Muller, a former safety barrier assembly foreman of VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH took the examinees under his wing, particularly in the examination phase and coached them until the end. “It has been a great pleasure working with these young men“, said Muller, “their thirst for knowledge, especially about security questions was enormous.

As a work sample the three examinees had to produce an adapter piece for a box profile from the system SUPER-RAIL to RAIL  ECO. The highlight was the development of the test piece: Their task was to carry out a guardrail installation of the system ESP BOS (Single Guard Rail, tree and object protection) with a total of 20 m on a closed section of the motorway junction A48-B9. After gathering and covering the required components, the posts were accurately aligned and vertically driven about 1 meter into the ground with an air hammer. Each of the examinees was given an adjutant and asked to individually assemble the spacers and safety barriers according to the drawings. The last step of the examination consisted of inspecting their own work by using a folding rule, spirit level and torque wrench.

The three trainees successfully passed the exam on July 25th and will be accepted by VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH directly as “Technical Specialist for Safety Barriers”. In August three new skilled workers will be trained in this area at VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH.

New flags at the roundabout Montabaur

Each year in spring flags are raised on the little green island of the roundabout at the Bahnhofstraße in Montabaur by Montabaur´s city council – a sure sign that winter is over, with its cold winds and spring is officially heralded with the joyful of the flags.

The old flags however, were “getting on in years.” In order to continue Montabaur´s tradition with colorful new flags and welcome spring befittingly, VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH has quickly donated a new set. In early May Vanessa Volkmann handed over the flags to Monica Decker from the city marketing and to the city mayor Klaus Mies who thanked her warmly in the name of the city and “all who will enjoy driving past it”.

Because of a close connection from VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH to the roundabout  - one outgoing road leads directly into the “Hohe Straße”, the headquarters of VR – the managing director Vanessa Volkmann has taken over a kind of sponsorship for the green island and the first set of flags provided three years ago.

“We feel connected with the city of Montabaur, home of the headquarters of the VR group. And we like to support projects that have to do with our core business, namely roads, “was the managing director´s commitment. Because flags have a strong symbolic character, it is a joy to be able to give this gift and thereby spice up the city with the new flags at the roundabout.

The eight flags include flags with the emblem of the town of Montabaur, a Westerwald flag, a European flag and flags of the countries France, England and the United States – countries where twin cities of Montabaur are located.

Internship at VR ends with career information fair "the working world"

As part of the pilot project “year internship” by the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Realschule plus in Nentershausen, VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH provided backup facilities for an internship to the young student Brikena Husaj. During the 2009 / 2010 school year the 15 year old had the opportunity once a week to experience a normal work day by being actively involved in her aspired occupation of “industrial clerk”.

The project “year internship” came to an end on April, 17th, 2010 at the school career information fair “the working world” which was organized by the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Hall in Nentershausen. At this event the students were given the opportunity to introduce their internship companies.

Brikena Husaj was professionally equiped by VR: Among other things visitors, pupils and teachers were able to examin a safety barrier model at a scale of 1:2.5 as well as observe a presentation of the lighted amphibian terrarium. Brikena presented the company, her internship activities as well as other more practical occupations of VR. She was actively supported by sales staff Tatjana Wisser and Alexandra Fränker.

INTERTRAFFIC Amsterdam 2010

In the field of traffic and transport industry the “Intertraffic Amsterdam” is known as the largest trade fair in the world. From 23-26th March 2010 experts have met in the dutch metropolis – already for the 20th time since its existence. More than 800 exhibitors from over 40 countries presented their products this year. Of course, VR was present with a booth as well.

True the slogan "Service is our Success" VR has completely dedicated its booth with 100 m² to the idea of service. “Our customer shall not only experience good advice but also feel good and comfortable," said Jan Dröge, Head of Export and responsible for supporting the customers outside Germany and introducing new products in the international market. So the booth was equipped with comfortable furniture, an inviting bar area and plenty of room for discussions but also for chatting. Absolute novelty: All exhibits were not constructed on a scale of 1:1, but true to scale “in small". By means of these handy models the visitor could be clearly explained product-specific differences, specialties and modifications by a technically competent team of advisors.

Due to the scale reduction more vehicle restraint systems could be shown on less space. "We are excited to see how many competitors take up this miniature-idea to the next fairs," Dröge smiles.

At the innovative booth there was a large crowd of people on all four days. German as well international customers and interested visitors used the days to personally inform about the news and to look for professional advice.

25.02.2010:
Easy but effective

The application of guard rail system in Germany is regulated by quality standards such as RAL RG 620 or TL-SP 99. Of the standards designs the single guard rail (abbr. ESP) as well as the single spaced guardrail (abbr. EDSP) has been known and proved for decades. In accordance with DIN EN 1317, the ESP has been tested with 4.0 N2-N5 and the ESP 2.0 with N2-W4. The EDSP reached 2.0 H1-W5, the EDSP 1:33 H1-W4. In order to realize a higher containment with the simplest possible system, the construction of EASY-RAIL was introduced on the market by VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH.

Until now, the traditional support bracket was vertically positioned to the guard rail beam. The newly developed support bracket gives the beam a slight decline. Because of that the beam lifts slightly on vehicle impact, which affects the containment level.

Another important element of the EASY-RAIL is the use of a new steel grade. As EASY-RAIL should both divert light trucks cleanly and have a smaller deflection (reduction of the working width) the properties of the commonly used steel (S 235 JR) were no longer sufficient.

The behavior of the EASY-RAIL 1:33 resemble that of the ESP, however EASY-RAIL achieved the enviable test result N2-W2 as well as H1-W3 at ASI A! The EASY-RAIL 2.0, which, like the ESP+ was tested on the embankment, has with N2-W3 and ASI A, a better scope than the ESP+ despite the missing enforcement-profile.

With the construction of EASY-RAIL, the foundation has been laid for a new product family, which promises the maximum security with minimal weight and ensures a simple, quick installation. Further products from the EASY-RAIL family will be introduced to the public in the near future.

Münz Corporate Challenge 2009

On June 26th, 2009 the Münz Corporate Challenge was played for the 7th time. Founder and namesake is the local Münz GmbH in Montabaur. Again this time the visitors and participants of the previous years were exceeded by far. More than 13.000 people from over 750 companies in the region registered up until just before the start. In brilliant sunshine the participants rolled, raced, ran and walked the 5 km course through the city of Koblenz. Almost traditionally runners of VOLKMANN&ROSSBACH started as well. The VR team started with 6 runners. The team consisted of Stefan Krauss (Department of National Sales), Diana Kettner (Purchasing Department) Tobias Müller (Department of Marketing / PR) and 2 trainees, Daniel Schönberger and Benjamin Fasel. Sabine Schnupp, Managing Director of our friend company Monta Systems, supported the runners in the orange-VR-coloured jerseys. The fastest runner from VR was the 18 year old trainee Daniel Schönberger, who quickly reached the finish line after 19 minutes and 33 seconds and placed 111th ranking in the overall standings. The runners were supported by friends, colleagues, visitors and enthusiastic cheerleading teams, who were standing at the side of the race track providing a great atmosphere.Awaiting the participants at the finish line was a boisterous party atmosphere with the after-run party of RPR 1, food, drinks and beer, to fill up the fluid balance again. For the next Challenge, the organizers are hoping to exceed the number of participants of this year again. The date for the next year has already been decided. The starting signal will be on June, 25th, 2010. Of course also with runners from

Campaign "Day of Action" 2009

June 23: For the 7th time June 23 had been declared the nationwide day of action, “Your day for Africa”,  organized by the “Day of Action” club. On this day students leave their textbooks and school bags at home and go to work all around the country for the educational opportunities of their peers in Africa. Their earnings flow into a common pot, used for educational projects for children and youth in five countries.

Naturally a job was made available for one of the many hard-working students again this year. Jannik Hennemann, a 5th grade student from the middle school of the Sophie-Hedwig High School in Diez, supported us energetically this year.

To warm up, the eleven year old student helped Brigitte Muscat and Marion Beck in the office with their daily morning activities. He then, along with Klaus Nebgen jun., an employee in the Steal Safety Barriers department, visited the company´s 10 km distant warehouse in Meudt. Together with the construction manager, the interested student made an incoming goods inspection. The rest of the morning, he helped Marion Hennemann and Sarah Jane Schäper, clerks in the domestic sales department. In the afternoon, the eleven year old supported Carole Tursini-Selbach in the reception.

At the end of the day, Jannik was proud and pleased to have done his part in being able to contribute his earnings to the donation pot. The proceeds will be used for educational projects for children and youth from the project partner “Human Help Network” in the five project countries Burundi, Rwanda, Angola, South Africa and the Sudan.

20.06.2009:
Day of the zebra crossing 2009

As a contribution to this year’s "German Day of the Zebra Crossing", VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH again has renovated a zebra crossing in VR’s hometown Montabaur for free. Goal of the nationwide campaign started by the German Road Marking Research Society (DSGS) is to improve road safety by having members repaint worn off pedestrian crossings that cities cannot afford to maintain. Together with the municipal authorities, VR has selected a crossing of a frequented main road close to Montabaur’s pedestrian zone.

“It’s not so easy to mark a zebra crossing,” says Robert Grauer, Senior Manager of the VR’s Road Marking Department. “At first we had to remove the old road marking, so that the new marking can cling to the asphalt. Then we put a special thick-layer marking on the street which has a long durability. Now the zebra crossing is shining again.” That was already the second one that VR has refurbished. And it won’t be the last one: “Last year we pledged to remark one crossing every year,” reveals Mr. Grauer, “and we are going to keep our promise!”

We improve road safety in all situations!

12.06.2009:
Successful exhibition in Bern

In June 2009, the Suisse Public, the largest and most comprehensive Swiss fair for public companies and administration, opened its gates for the 19th time. The title "Suisse Public" underlines the aim of the exhibition makers to appeal to all fields of the public sector. The exhibition is regarded as central information and communication platform for municipalities, cantons, government and large companies. VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH were present on a joint stand together with their Swiss partners Sagérime (Bull) and Kaufmann (Goldau).

“We are perfectly satisfied with the course of the fair,” says Jan Dröge, Director of VR’s International Division and responsible for the Swiss market. „The cooperation with Sagérime and Kaufmann ist excellent, not only with regards to mobile barriers and passive safety systems.”

Located on an area of over 74,000 m² and with over 550 exhibitors of machinery, equipment, materials and services, the exhibition attracted around 21,000 competent visitors from administration and public services. "The discussions with the various decision makers have been very productive and promising," remarks the export manager. "We can truly say that the participation in this event has paid off!"

TG1 meeting at VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH

End of September, a meeting of  TG1 - which is one of the subgroups of CEN (french: Comité Européen de Normalisation = European committee of standardization)  took place in Montabaur. During the 2 day conference concerning the European norm EN 1317 part 4 "terminals and transitions", important preparatory works for future CEN decisions were done.

After work, VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH invited them one evening for relaxation to celebrate "Oktoberfest" with a lot of Bavarian flair; the slogan was: "Experience Montabaur - with a difference". "The event was very successful," according to Wolfgang Wink, Senior Manager International Division of VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH and CEN delegate for Germany. "All members enjoyed very much the "Oktoberfest"  "the delegates from many countries will keep this evening in a very fond memory."

Galileo-experiment with guardrails of VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH

In August, there were some shootings on the premises of the German safety standards authority TÜV in Munich which were directed by Maximus Film for the TV programme "Galileo" by order of the German TV channel ProSieben.

Topic of this "test": How to bring a car to a stop if the brakes fail? "Classical" recommendations such as to pull on the handbrake or to downshift were tested carefully as well as a crash into a vehicle restraint system ("guardrail") or a stop on the fields.

The guardrails for this "just for fun experiment" were provided by VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH and installed by a team of LEIT-RAMM from Baldham, an affiliated company of VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH.

The feature is broadcasted on 5 September starting at 19.10 o'clock within the scope of the "Galileo" broadcasting.

11.08.2008:
Zebra crossing day 2008

Due to the "zebra crossing day" campaign, VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH refurbishes an old zebra crossing free of charge. The nationwide campaign launched by the German Society for Road Marking is aiming at improving road safety by refurbishing old zebra crossings. In Montabaur, a heavy-strained crosswalk in Bahnhofstraße opposite driving school Korn was chosen.

Since Saturday, this zebra crossing in Alleestraße glooms in new splendor. The common belief that "some white paint and a large brush" is sufficient to refit, makes Robert Grauer smile, head of road marking department of VR. "The first step is to remove the old crossing in order to avoid adhesion problems," the expert explains. "Afterwards, the new marking can be applied." By the way, it is not just new paint - VR uses something very special: "We utilise high-performance marking foil of 3M, this foil reflects the light in an optimal way even if the road is wet and you can see it very clearly at night", Robert Grauer praises this product and its manufacturer.

Mayor Klaus Mies is pleased about the campaign. Just at this spot opposite the driving school and right next to the bus stop, the crosswalk is an important guideline not only for pedestrians, but also for drivers and thus provides more safety. The advantages of a "pedestrian crossing" - which is the more formal term for the commonly used expression "zebra crossing" - are obvious: the investment is smaller compared to that for a traffic light; it allows drivers and pedestrians to respond in a very flexible way to traffic situations; moreover, they can decide independently when crossing the street  without any "rigid restrictions" made by a traffic light: they do not have to wait for the green light, and thus are not tempted to cross the street if the light is red and if there is no car in sight. And there are advantages for the car drivers, too: although they have to approach the crossing carefully, they can drive on without stopping if no pedestrian crosses.

VOLKMANN & ROSSBACH promised to the municipality of Montabaur either to donate a new crossing or to refurbish an old one at VR's expenses each year on the occasion of "zebra crossing day". By the way: it is no coincidence that "zebra crossing day" is in August: On 24 August 1953, "zebra crossings" were introduced nationwide into German legislation for the first time.
